What is a license server?
A license server is a specially configured computer that serves (provides) floating licenses to Keysight products running (typically) on other machines (the licensing clients in the client/server architecture). It is sometimes referred to as a remote license server to indicate that it is running on a different machine from the licensed Keysight products.
- To function as a floating license server, a machine must run the FlexNet Publisher license server manager (lmgrd) and the Keysight vendor daemon (agileesofd).
- The license files are installed on the license server machine. (You or your system administrator will install them there.)
- Each client machine is configured to request its licenses from that server. (See Specify a Remote License Server.) You can also configure a client to get its licenses from multiple license servers; in that case, when you run the licensed software, it requests the needed license from each server in turn until a request is successful (meaning that server had the correct license available).
- In this way, many users/machines can share a pool of licenses. Each machine uses only the licenses needed for the Keysight products it is running at that time; when a user closes or stops a licensed product, the license is returned to the server's pool and can be used by someone else.
